Green Initiatives

Harris LithoGraphics began as a prepress shop in 1975 and has evolved into a full service printing company that offers brochures, books, newsletters, letterheads, envelopes, business cards, saddle stitched books, pamphlets, direct mail pieces, and more.

Every project at Harris is produced in the greenest, most environmentally friendly atmosphere possible. We believe that a commitment to green isn’t enough – actions, not words, make the difference in our environment.

That’s why Harris LithoGraphics uses only vegetable based inks instead of petroleum based products, which can have a negative impact on the environment.

Besides the vegetable based inks, Harris LithoGraphics runs our daily operations, from turning on the coffee machine at the home office to running our presses, on energy that is derived from wind power.

Our commitment to the environment is nothing new, we were the first printer in the entire United States to receive chain-of-custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council for our operations in 2003.

FSC certification ensures you that the paper we use has been made from wood harvested from well-managed forests.

At Harris, we feel that committing to the environment today ensures that there’s a tomorrow for everyone.

About the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

The FSC is a global non-profit devoted to encouraging the responsible use of the world’s wood resources by promoting responsible forest management. The body focuses on sustainable yield timber management, reducing soil erosion during harvest, preventing water pollution, and taking wildlife habitat into consideration by proper harvest management planning.

The FSC promotes responsible forest management globally by certifying forest products that meet the most rigorous standards in the world. The organization brings industry, environmentalists, and community groups together to promote practical solutions that meet its diverse stakeholders' needs. The organization was founded in 1993 by environmental groups, the timber industry, foresters, indigenous peoples and community groups from 25 countries.

The FSC in the United States is backed by 14 major environmental organizations (the Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Sierra Club and others) and by major businesses (Home Depot, Lowes, Anderson Windows).

The FSC standards encourage environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. FSC's Principles and Criteria are the basis for defining responsible forestry and for evaluating and accrediting certifiers.

Consumers purchasing products bearing the FSC label can be assured that their wood product comes from a forest that has been responsibly managed to FSC standards.

The FSC US office is located in Washington, D.C, and has a national presence through the work of its volunteer board with three representatives each from the economic, social and environmental chambers. It also works through its regional standards coordinators, and FSC members located throughout the U.S.

  • 100% Wind Powered

    100% Wind Powered

Harris LithoGraphics has entered an agreement with Glacial Energy to purchase wind energy and 'green up' 100% of our conventional electricity consumption with this clean, renewable energy. We are proud to say we are 100% powered by the wind. We will continue to focus on protecting the environment through sustainability, and providing printing services in an environmentally responsible manner.

  • Vegetable Based Inks

    Vegetable Based Inks

Harris LithoGraphics is one of the first printing companies to custom mix vegetable-based inks onsite, avoiding unnecessary waste. Vegetable and soy based inks avoid the use of petroleum, and release less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. This makes breathing a whole lot easier for everyone near a printing press and better overall quality of air for all of us.

  • Recycled Paper

    Recycled Paper

We utilize recycled paper whenever possible. A client can print their project on recycled paper to do their part in producing environmentally friendly products.

When we do not use recycled paper for a project, our FSC certification ensures you that the paper we use has been made from wood harvested from well-managed forests. The FSC promotes responsible forest management globally by certifying forest products that meet the most rigorous standards in the world.
